The band began shopping their demo in the hope of securing a record deal, and after a verbal agreement with founder Daniel Miller, began an important partnership with fledgling label ‘Mute Records’. The band settled on a name borrowed from a French fashion magazine and played their first gig in 1980 at their school. Formed in the late 70’s in Essex, UK, the band transitioned from the early, ‘The Cure’ influenced work into synthesizer territory, inspired by the pioneering work of acts like ‘Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark’.
