Students will be pointed toward meaningful, personal, artistic growth. Students will leave this workshop excited and ready to experiment more on their own. Lori Putnam’s paintings are a personal and genuine response to a scene, and she encourages her students to learn to do the same. These sketches will then be used as inspirational resource materials for more complete, slightly larger, studio pieces that remain fresh and inviting.

Students will begin on location outdoors making sketches and studies. This workshop is a combination plein air and studio workshop. "Plein Air to Studio, Making your Studies Work for you Indoors" Aspects of the portrait will be emphasized – such as hair, hands, and obtaining a good likeness – but a variety of figure-based themes, additional subjects, and conceptual interests may be pursued. Students will work independently, with individual critiques from the instructor. Demonstrations will address effective set up of workspace, palette, and lighting choosing a good photo source and both grisaille underpainting and alla prima painting techniques. Join renowned realist painter and PAFA alum Fred Danziger from his studio via Zoom for this live portrait and figurative painting course! Whether working from good photo sources or a live model, the essential elements of figurative realism remain the same: composition, color, and accurate representations of light, form, and space. Instructor: Charlie Hunter, Cost: $600 (not including fees) Multiple demos by Hunter will show how he goes about creating his award-winning work. By simplifying forms and emphasizing composition, student’s work can take on a power that will truly make it stand out. Students will work with Hunter as he guides them through creating value drawings from personal photographs – an often-overlooked step that pays off in spades! Then, with these drawings as one’s stepping stone, students will be able to develop memorable and dynamic paintings.
